A gutshot is a straight that you complete from inside, and is half as likely to hit as an open-ended straight.
A pot is the aggregate of all the bets and raises made by all players in a single deal. You can win a pot by making a good bet that no one else calls, or by making the smallest possible bet. You can also win by bluffing. A player who bluffs is trying to convince others that their hand is better than it actually is.
The ante is a small bet that all players must make before the cards are dealt. It’s often only a few dollars, but the amount is decided by the table. It’s also the most important bet to make. Usually, you’ll have to call an ante-matching bet, which means you must match the previous bettor’s bet. You might also be able to make a winning poker hand with an ace-king, which is the simplest possible combination of two cards.
